After the Council of Trent, scenes from the lives of the saints took on special significance. Usually, artists chose those episodes from the lives in which the saints were subjected to torment and persecution.

The desire of the Catholic Church to more firmly establish the cult of saints is understandable - after all, the Protestants rejected this cult. Veronese wrote quite a few works of this kind. Among them are the “Martyrdom of Saints Primolus and Felician”, created in 1562 for the Church of Santa Maria; “Martyrdom of St. Justina”, which the master wrote in 1573 for the church of the same name in Padua, and “Martyrdom of St. Mina”.

The last of these works was probably completed by Veronese's students after his death.
