Mount Sainte-Victoire is one painting from a series by the French Post-Impressionist painter Paul Cezanne dedicated to the mountain range of the same name in the vicinity of Aix-en-Provence. In total, there are 87 works by Cezanne on this subject. Born in Aix-en-Provence, Cezanne knew and loved the surrounding landscapes from a young age.

During his trip to Marseille in the spring of 1878, Cézanne noted the “stunning view of the Sainte-Victoire mountain range that dominates Borkøy,” but was only able to return to the topic in the mid-1880s. The four landscape canvases were painted from a hill in Bellevue, where the estate of the artist's son-in-law Maxime Conil was located and offered a pastoral view of the Arc River valley with Mount Sainte-Victoire in the background. In these works, Cézanne explored the silhouette of a distant mountain along with its surroundings, in this case a group of pine trees in the foreground. Their tall, thin trunks and bright green crowns serve as a contrast to the indistinct mountain range. The fertile valley is crossed by a railway bridge, reminiscent of a Roman viaduct, with a train passing over it. Each brush stroke is clear and deliberate: vertical in the foreground, horizontal in the valley, curved on the leaves of the trees and straight for the houses. Although blues and greens predominate, pinks and yellows are found throughout, helping to create the impression of the bright light of Provence. Trying to present impressionism as “something strong and durable like the art of museums,” Cézanne focused on content and form. The compositional structure is reminiscent of the classical landscapes of the seventeenth-century French master Nicolas Poussin, whose works the artist studied at the Louvre. Over the next decade, Mount Sainte-Victoire became Cézanne's favorite landscape motif, but unlike his first works, it began to dominate the surrounding landscape.
